1. What is the country of origin of Starfish?

Starfish was designed, programed and currently manufactured in Malaysia. It took two years to develope the product. Aid for its development came in the form of a grant from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia under their Innofund initiative.

2. Can I use Starfish for Fleet Management?

Fleet Managers who cannot justify the funding for a fleet management system can now find the solution in Starfish. The way in which starfish works when compared with other GSM/GPS systems make Starfish the prefered candidate for Fleet Management System. For more information, you can download document about Starfish and Fleet Management Systems here.

3. Everyone claims that their GSM/GPS system is different. Is Starfish really different?

The bigest difference between Starfish and most other GSM/GPS products is that it uses GPRS/ICS (Internet Communications Services) rather then GPRS/SMS (Short Message Services) to transfer data. Just like jet planes and propeller planes, GPRS/ICS is much more flexible a communications infrastructure than SMS and like jet planes, GPRS/ICS can go further, is much faster and do much more. A document can be found here.

4. Can I use prepaid mobile phone cards?

Yes, you can use prepaid mobile phone cards .. *but* here are somethings you will need to remember. Firstly, you need to top up the card with value regularly. It would be difficult to get at the sim card once the unit is installed. So there must be away of topping up the value without getting to the sim card. Most mobile phone operators provide a way to do that. Secondly, Mobile operators wont tell you this but some prepaid GPRS usage accounting will end up costing you more to use than GPRS on postpaid. For example, in Malaysia prepaid phone lines from all Celcom, Maxis and Digi will cost you much more than their postpaid lines, with he exception of Digi, which would actually cost you just as much, postpaid or prepaid. Consequently, if you can get a package that has unlimited GPRS usage for a flat monthly rate, it would be better.

5. Where can I find the Starfish ID and the Activation Key?

The Starfish Id and Activation Key can be found in two places. One is at the back of the Installation Guide. This is a booklet packed inside the box. The other location is inside starfish itself. You will need to open up the cover of Starfish to see it. The Starfish id is a 12 digit number whereas the activation key is a 16 digit hexadecimal number, that is (0-9,A-F).When keying this in, remember to use capitals for A-F. This is because Starfish website is case sensitive. Keep the installation guide with these numbers somewhere safe and confidential.
